A healthy democracy needs both liberals and conservatives. It would be nice if more of today's liberals and conservatives recognized that fact. Another interesting thing: political parties can change their polarities: what was once the liberal party becomes the conservative one and vice versa. Today the Democratic Party shows signs of becoming the party of big money and the upper-middle class while the Republicans are attracting more and more working-class voters of all races and ethnicities.

This needs a much longer and more detailed response than I can give it right now. As briefly as I can put it, the issues that are most salient to the current cultural left (BLM, climate, transgenderism) simply do not parse as left or right. They are cudgels to be used in class warfare. The progressives are the richest and most powerful people in the country, they are the optimates. It is not an accident that the richest counties vote the most heavily for Democrats. Their goal is to impoverish, humiliate, and demoralize the populares. Some of the most insightful critics are old lefties like Joel Kotkin
